Insulation - Part 2

▪ Insulation is one are where you can easily get ripped off if you are not paying attention.  If an unethical insulation contractor knows that you are not going to check his work before the walls are covered with drywall, he may skip putting insulation in some needed areas.  If you are going to be around the space where insulation is being installed, be sure to use a protective respiratory mask so that you do not inhale the airborne fiberglass particles.

▪ "Chinking" is the term used to describe the process of taking bits of insulation and plugging gaps where the normal insulation batts have not covered completely.

▪ Fiberglass insulation between roof rafters block the flow of air up to the ridge vent.  Be sure that the insulation contractor installs channels behind the insulation that will allow the ventilation to occur.

▪ Fiberglass insulation that is correctly installed will have the side with the paper facing into the air conditioned space.  The label on the insulation itself will usually give an indication of how to properly install it.
