Remove a Popcorn Ceiling
How do you remove a popcorn ceiling? I've done this and had a pretty
satisfactory result.
The key to removing the popcorn ceiling is to get it moist and then
use a big drywall scraper to get it to come off in sheets. To moisten
the popcorn ceiling, I used a garden hose with a fine mist sprayer
attachment on the end. Of course, I wanted the popcorn ceiling to be
moist enough to remove, but not so moist as to cause a mildew problem
in the room!
After moving out the furniture and putting plastic on the floor to
catch the falling debris (I taped it down), I was ready to start
removing the popcorn ceiling. I used a serious respirator mask (got
it at Home Depot), because I didn't want to take any chances breathing
the dust. I would use a proper two strap drywall dust mask and be
sure to use it! I don't recall mine being too expensive, and I still
use it for other projects besides removing popcorn ceilings.
Another tip if you are going to remove a popcorn ceiling is to use a
fan to help dry out the room after you are done. Oh, and I used a 12"
drywall scraper that worked pretty well.
Good luck removing your popcorn ceiling!
