Basement Furnace

-Occasionally, home renovators ask me about basement furnaces.  Sometimes a homeowner will have a basement furnace located in an undesirable spot.  Perhaps they are finishing their basement or are reconfiguring the space.  Is it possible to move your basement furnace?

-While I have never actually had to move a furnace in any of the houses that I have remodelled, I do know that moving your basement furnace is possible.  However, the expense may be prohibitive, and there may be other considerations that impede your progress.

-For example, gas furnaces and electric furnaces have different needs in terms of venting.  Obviously, the gas furnace would have to be close to a gas line or the gas line would have to be redirected to connect with your  basement furnace.  Boilers are another kettle of fish entirely.  Also, your return and supply ducting would have to be relocated.

-I would contact a local hvac contractor and have them come over to discuss moving your basement furnace.  In my experience, contractors are generous with their opinions, particularly if you are getting a quote from them.

-Good luck with your basement furnace and happy renovating!
