Modular Homes
-Early in my career, I looked into modular homes as a possible way to save on
construction costs. Here are some considerations for modular homes:
-I would first check with my local building code enforcement office to make
sure that the modular home construction would be acceptable in my jurisdiction.
You might want to hire an architect to review the plans and reassure you that
they will work in your area.
-Another issue: do you live in a historic district? Historic
districts have stringent guidelines regarding what is an acceptable appearance,
and your modular home may or may not be satisfactory.
-Who will put the modular home together? Where will extra parts be
stored? What is the track record of the modular home manufacturer?
-I would ask the modular home manufacturer for names of builders in my area
whom I could speak with. I would ask these builders some specific
questions: Were all of the materials delivered for the modular home?
Was the company easy to work with if/when problems arose? What was the
quality of the construction?
-I would definitely drive to look at a completed modular home to inspect it
and see if it was up to my standards of appearance and construction.
