Remove Popcorn Ceiling
-To me, popcorn ceilings have a dated look. I am happy to remove my popcorn ceiling or cover it up whenever possible.
-I have mostly encountered popcorn ceilings in apartment buildings, but of course, they are in many homes as well. Many have complained about cracking and peeling of the popcorn material. I understand that it is possible to repair small cracks. I have usually had my painter fix these problems.
-While I have never encountered it, I understand that some popcorn ceilings can contain asbestos. If you are concerned about this, do not hesitate to contact an asbestos remediation professional for advice on how to proceed.
-Assuming that you have not identified a potential asbestos problem with your popcorn ceiling, you might want to either cover it up with a new drywall ceiling or strip it and remove it before going with a smooth ceiling. Obviously, covering it up will lower your ceiling height.
-I have heard of tongue and groove beadboard being used to cover the popcorn ceiling so that the reduction in ceiling height is negligible.
-By the way, whenever I am removing or altering popcorn ceilings or drywall for that matter, I use a respirator to protect my lungs from the particles. Be safe!
